PANEL 2  1PM - 1:45PM BST | Employment after Prison: Ending discrimination faced by returning citizens

While the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (the Act) prevents discrimination against citizens with minor convictions who seek working opportunities, sadly this is not the reality for many job seekers today. Many people with criminal convictions struggle to shake off the stigma, access support and gain employment.

There are many heart-breaking stories of people with convictions facing discrimination and prejudice and being denied an opportunity for a second chance.  With roughly 75% of employers in the UK admitting to discriminating against candidates who disclose a conviction at an earlier stage, what can be done to eliminate these unfair practices and ensure people are given fair access?

In this session we’ll look at the blatant discrimination, barriers and challenges these individuals encounter and hear how some bold organisations are breaking the trend and reaping the rewards of hiring returning citizens.

Despite hearing about the advantages that people with disabilities can offer employers, too many companies still hold themselves back when it comes to hiring people with disabilities. They see hiring (some) persons with disabilities as being “the right thing to do” but do not see it as part of a talent strategy that will benefit the company and outweigh what they see as the potential complications, expenses and risk.

In today’s panel our leaders will share their experience creating inclusive workplaces for those with disabilities, discuss the benefits they’ve gained and give pragmatic advice for organisations who want to make a change.

With mental health problems affecting one in six British workers each year and mental health being the leading cause of sickness absence it is not surprising that employers are starting to look more closely at the crucial role they play in supporting the wellbeing of their staff. Money spent on improving mental health has shown a consistently positive return on Investment.

So how do you produce, implement and communicate a mental health at work plan that encourages and promotes good mental health of all staff and an open organisational culture? In today’s session, we’ll hear from inspirational leaders about how they’ve laid out plans that support their staff’s and their own mental health and well-being.

We’ll also speak to them about their position as a role model for the next generation to follow. And learn about the impact they have had on the people in their lives and organisations.

PANEL 7  6PM - 6:45PM BST | Moving the DIAL on Supplier Diversity 

Supplier Diversity means creating a supplier base that reflects the diversity of our societies, customers and employees. Many large organisations like Unilever and P&G have started programs to review their suppliers for diversity – to ensure they are working with diverse suppliers and to partner with underrepresented groups in business. A diverse supply network will out-think, out- innovate, and out –perform a non-diverse supply network. Our diverse supplies are more agile, responsive, innovative, more likely to hire a diverse pool of employees and give back to their community. 

 

Our panelists will review and discuss the trend for large organisations to demand diverse supply network. They will discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by companies to create a diverse supplier base.

In this session, we’ll hear from our summit partners on their journey to become authentic leaders. How speaking their minds, challenging the status quo, making brave choices and taking real action has led them to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace. 

 

In this session we will cover:  why all CEO’s need to be a beacon to drive the D, I and B agenda, and how they made the shift from viewing D&I as an HR imperative to seeing it as their responsibility and that of the entire C suite function. 

 

We'll also hear their lessons on how to tackle uncomfortable subjects and difficult conversations without defaulting to defensive, some reflections on what they got right and what they got wrong, and what key areas they have identified and developed that are true game changers.

Cultural competence, in brief, is the ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures. This ability depends on awareness of one’s own cultural worldview, knowledge of other cultural practices and worldviews, tolerant attitudes towards cultural differences, and cross-cultural skills. The more different cultures, ethnicities and nationalities work together, the more cultural awareness, curiosity and sensitivity are essential for teams to thrive.  All cultures have slightly different ways of operating, from ways of eating and drinking to ideas on meeting protocol and how to shake a colleague's hand. Knowing how to embrace this diversity is the key to a creating high performance teams that feel included and that they belong. In this finale panel, we'll hear from our summit partners – leading CEOs – on the importance of turning words into action and how the D and I focus has shifted beyond the “feel-good” rhetoric and positive optics of diversity. How have each of them ensured measurable change is happening in their own organisations?

 

 We'll learn about their own organisation’s journey to create better equality, diversity and inclusion, the impact this has had not only on their teams, but on their business performance – both positive and negative.  You’ll learn about their own public commitments to drive equality and diversity and the lessons they’ve learnt along the way about what works and what doesn’t. And finally, get to hear their unique stories that will help us see that there is no ‘one-way’ to make progress but understand how we can all reach our destinations in different ways.
